Athens Arts League has started a pilot program at East Limestone High School to provide free art classes to students taking art survey.
This semester, High Cotton Arts artist Sonya Gordon has taught water classes to the students with Athens Arts League providing the supplies.
Art survey teacher Jennifer Janzen said the pilot program allows her to incorporate various mediums of art instruction into the curriculum and provides a hands-on art activity for the students.
"Part of our mission is to provide art education, and we have enjoyed seeing the creativity expressed by Mrs. Janzen's students," said Athens Arts League Board Vice President and art class volunteer Diane Lehr.
On Friday, April 28, Gordon taught a water color piece called "Deep Roots." Janzen will choose some of her students' creations for exhibit at High Cotton Arts and later this summer for exhibit in the Athens Mayor's Youth Commission Art Corner at Athens City Hall.
"This program has also given my students an opportunity to see their work on display, which further encourages them to create and express themselves," Janzen said.
